Laptop SOS

When it comes to computers one must speak to me like I am 5 years old.

As I’ve said many times before I’m a marketer’s dream client and normally when picking out my computers it’s always about what’s pretty and has the biggest monitor or coolest keyboard. Totally not proud of that, but alas it’s true.

Months ago my laptop broke and I was helpless.

I was literally in tears the day my HP stopped turning on.

I had to resort to using my desktop from my college days!

All was suppose to be well when my husband got gifted a laptop for Christmas from his job. Well the laptop never came in December or January or February… i think you get where I’m going with this.

It’s now April and we just found out the laptop is never coming from Dell, because they decided they weren’t going to produce it anymore.

Bright side to this dilemma is that we now get to pick out whatever we want.

So lovely readers of mine please help this 5 year old figure out what laptop she should get.

I keep screaming MAC to my husband anytime he walks by, but let’s be honest it’s pretty and that’s why I want it. Do you think this tech challenged lady can figure out how to work it?

mac

If you have a second please leave me a comment and let me know what you would recommend in the MAC family or anything else. Except HP they are dead to me. :)

  2. Just went to a Mac (desktop) in August. I LOOOOOVE it. I am so not tech saavy, but love to do creative things and that's what the Mac is all about. I figure if all the elementary schools use Mac, it is because it is very intuitive. Seriously. My girls (9 & 4) have no problem manuevering their way around.
I am so in love with iPhoto (comes on the machine_--it has made it all worth it for me. I have a large 24"? screen and viewing photos is a dream.
    GO FOR IT!

    and you're right, it's super pretty :)

  6. Thanks for all the help ladies! It's sounding like it should be a MAC.

Any specifics on a certain model? I would like to be able to move it around so no desktop version at the moment.

    :)

  9. I am in the same boat you are right now - I have a very good friend who works for the MAC store so I sat down with her and discussed all my needs...for blogging, some creative work, and day to day business, a macbook is just fine - the upgrade to a macbook pro is not worth it unless your cutting music, videos, etc. on a daily basis (or so she says). She has a lot of insite so I definitely trust her opinion and will be going with the white macbook - now just to decide the screen size!

Oh yes, and she said get the one on one package for $99 - it trains you on how to operate a mac and gives you support for a year - she said it's an amazing deal and a GREAT opportunity for newbies like us!

    Hope that helps you! :-)

  10. I had an HP for less than one year, and the fan was so loud I could hear it from another room. It overheated every single time I used it. I bought a white MacBook a couple months ago and it is THE BEST purchase I have ever made. I will NEVER by a PC again, especially an HP. It was a complete waste of money because most PC's last 2-3 years, everyone I know who has had a MAC has had it for at least 4-5.

I design websites and flyers and it has done wonders for that. Great software, keeps me very organized and so easy to use.

    Good luck!

  11. Mac all the way! You will never regret it!

I currently use the MacBook (NOT the pro) but I upgraded the RAM when I bought it - it's cheaper to do when you buy it. It gives me the power of the Pro, but was a bit cheaper. Plus I liked the white case more than the aluminum case - call me crazy, it's just preference!

  13. I got one a little over a year ago and LOVE it. It just makes sense. It did take a bit of getting used to, but it was pretty swift.

  14. O, your 'mac daddy' comment was too sweet today! loved it and thanks for the laugh. My sis has a mac and loves it - I bet once you take the plunge it will be great. you'd pick it up in no time...

  15. I have always been a pc girl. Until two of the three desktops in my office fried. Totally unrecoverable. I switched to mac once I found out I could use it for CAD. Boron line, I can't imagine workinbwithout one now. And nevermind blogging - I would be lost blogginbwihout it. It makes everything easier, faster and better. especially images and keeping multiple pages open. In my humble opinion;)

  16. MAC!!! I'm a Mac girl at heart, but I have a PC at home. Mac's are much more user-friendly than PC's. My friend has had his Macbook Pro for eight years now and it still works. Get one! They cost more up front but you definitely get your money's worth.

  17. Go MAC!! I have an iMAC (desktop with a whoptie of a screen, awesome for designing and viewing images). I just got it last month and will never go back to PC world. Good luck!

  18. I have a Macbook Pro (about two years old), my sister has a Macbook and we just bought my mom a brand new Macbook Pro for Christmas this year. A little obsessed right? I really can't say enough good things about Mac. I've NEVER had a problem with mine! After having Dells and HPs that broke all the time it's such a relief to have a reliable product! Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to help! xx

  19. Sorry I'm a PC gal. You can't teach this old dog many new tricks. The only thing that goes with my Mac is cheese!

  20. Im so glad you wrote this because I am really wanting to get one but I have always used a PC! All your comments are screaming MAC!!

  21. omg, i've had my Macbook for 4 years, and it is my sunshine...my only sunshine...etc! and it's very user-friendly, and you don't have to buy 8 zillion anti-virus programs. (added bonus)

good luck, it's always a stressful thing, knowing you'll be stuck with it for a while!

  22. Mac IS the way to go... especially with your blog and software capabilities the Mac can offer you. I have a desktop and a laptop, and they are both durable! To my HORROR, my 4-year-old spilled a full glass of water over the keyboard of my Laptop, and after 2 days of drying it out it started up like the champ it is. Saving $ in the long run! Just make hubby read all of our comments! :)

  24. Hi, I'm Tara, and I'm a PC.

I have to use a Mac at work sometimes and it drives me nuts. I know this is because I've used a PC my entire life, but the lack of a right click KILLS ME.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and I love it. She's been working great for almost 3 years now, and shows no signs of stopping.

  25. We have a macbook, also not Pro. I love it, until 2-3 years ago I was all PC. But then my husband purchased this guy (probably because it was pretty) and now were addicted. It's really very simple to use, it takes a little getting used to at first just because of your habits with a PC, but it is not difficult and you do not have to be tech savvy (trust me I am not).

Hope this helps! mac, mac, mac, mac - hoping your husband heard that!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh there is a fix for the right click.. I am just so computer stupid I could not tell you. Go for a MAC they just work. No installing windows to uninstall windows to reinstall windows. My sisters 1 year old PC laptop is still booting up when I have already found a wifi thingy at the the coffee house.

  27. I am a MAC girl through and through. My husband switched to one 6 or 7 years ago when he started to do graphics at work and he raved about how much he loved it. I didn't see the big deal at all. Then through some fancy foot work, he was able to give me his and get a new one. I fell in love. Then for my birthday 2 years ago he got me a new one of my very own. We also converted my minimally tech savvy 60 year old mom to one, she didn't have a problem switching at all. I still use a PC for CAD and don't have a problem switching between the two. Good Luck!

  28. Get a MAC. I am planning purcharsing one very, very, soon. I just got my HP back after having it repaired for the second time in less then a year and its only a year old! HP sucks!

  29. I love my macbook! With Mac you can't go wrong no matter what model you pick, plus there are lots of great accessories to personalize it as your own! Can't wait to see what you pick!

  31. GO FOR THE MAC PLEASE! I AM A CONVERT AND I LOVE IT! KG

  32. The Mac will take you a few days to figure out but after that, it will be so simple. It is very intuitive and user friendly. GO FOR IT!

  33. I have a Dell laptop and love it, however, my sister just got the Macbook and I do have to say it's pretty cool. I ask to hold it when I go over to her house-hahaa. The only downside is switching all your info over to a new computer...But hey, with how pretty and sleek they are... *Amy

  34. I say get a 15 inch MacBook Pro. I started out with a 13in a few years ago as my first Mac. Loved it but needed more screen space, so I upgraded about a month ago. Also, there's not a big difference between the 15 and 17 inch models when you compare them side by side.

I also bought a netbook for $350 that I use for travelling, notetaking, trips to the coffeeshop. It's super light and I feel better toting that around rather than my $2000 MacBook.

  35. i just switched to a MAC - love it!! Easy breezy - and you're right - it just looks so cute!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm still using my desktop from college too so I'm no help! I am thinking of a netbook though...

  37. Mac's are WAAAAAY easier for the un-technologically gifted. I love my Mac and will never go back!

    ReplyDelete
  38. One MEEEELION percent get a Mac! Been a Mac user since the dawn of time. I have a MacBook Pro and it's fantabulous! So easy to use and Macs don't have all those problems w/viruses.

Got DH a Sony Vaio last Xmas and by the summer it was dead from viruses. He now wants a MacBook after using mine.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love my MacBook. But if you do go the Mac route, but sure to get the Microsoft Office suite. Sooo much easier to have the same tools when sending documents to other people... they might come with this now? Mine is a year or two old and I had to buy it seperately.

And though they are reliable, they DO crash once in a blue moon, so don't forget the proper backups and external hard drives!

    ReplyDelete
  40. get a mac. they are so user friendly and fun--i've had my macbook pro for almost 5 years and it's still running strong!

  41. I have a mac book, but here's a MAJOR watch out: I have spent a small fortune in software to make my mac book compatible with everyone else’s PC. I don’t know that it’s been worth it. The mac book cost a few thousand where I could have picked up a PC (any brand) for a few hundred. The one advantage (and it’s pretty big really) is that there is an Apple store in my neighborhood and whenever I have a problem, I can take my mac book to the Genius Bar and they do their best to resolve the issue. So, there’s my two cents and clearly that’s all it’s worth. Good luck!

  42. I have a macbook and surprise, surprise i bought it because of its aesthetics more then anything, of course my husband gives me grief mainly because most of his business is with Microsoft, and even if he won't admit it he loves my computer, its super easy to use, great for syncing with my iphone and ipod and calendar and music and photo. Take it from a computer dummy, go for it and get one!!

  43. I've had a Macbook Pro at work for four years now and I love it. It's very intuitive once you get used to it, and the people at the Apple Store have always been very helpful. Between them & Google, I've found answers to most Mac-related questions I've had over the years.

One word of caution - the aluminum on my MacBook Pro dented in several places, and that's with me keeping it on my desk 95% of the time. It doesn't visually bother me (they're very small) but when I sent it off recently for some maintenance, I found out that those dents can damage the interior of the machine and make servicing it cost like four times more. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have that problem with the sturdier white exterior on the MacBook. Just something to consider!

  44. Once you go Mac, you never go back!

We were PC users until about 5 years ago - initially enticed by the pretty screen and "hip factor," the user friendly interface and the fact that we have had no problems with either of our laptops (2) or desktops (2) we have become the most devoted of customers 9and we are not "computer people."

  45. I have a mac, and im not gonna lie, i love it, but as i would love any computer.

What i think is, mac have gotten to a point where they can sell you the same features that pcs do (in graphics, ram, and hard drive for ex) and charge you double what a pc would...youre just paying for the apple.

Not to mention that windows 7 is great and pretty similar to OS X, AND macs dont have HDMI outlets or bluray disc drives.

So, my 2 cents is, I love my mac, and its very user-friendly, but youre paying for the brand, not the quality...it isnt worth what it costs.

  46. MAC MAC MAC! You'll never go back! I have a Macbook Pro and LOOOVE it! The transition is seamless.

  47. I agree with Katie Mac Book Pro. I can honestly say except for an 2 month internship as a law clerk some 20 years ago I have never touched a PC. I know, I wear this like some virginal badge. Maybe it has something to do with growing up down the highway from the Apple "campus," or the fact that I worked in advertising for 100 years, and it's a mac obsessed industry. But whatever the reason, I am as loyal to Apple as I am to Starbucks. (And computers don't even hit the bloodstream.) These two companies are the fuel of the creative world! In Starbuck's case, literally. Constantly delighting us with new products, Apple takes care of me like hip parents who were always give their kids the lastest and greatest, and encouraging their creativity. You MUST have a mac!!!

  48. That is so me! Show me a hot pink or red laptop and Im sold! We can't help it!

  49. If you are tech-challenged, then by all means GET A MACBOOK!!!!! I use an HP (and have used Dell) for work, but for home, I am an apple-chick. You will LLLLLOVE it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I *love*love*LOVE* my MacBook Pro. I switched from evil WinBox more than a year ago & haven't looked back. SO much easier!
I would suggest an iMac (desktop) or iBook. Also, check out the Apple refurb site. My MacBook was the previous year's model and nearly a grand cheaper. :-)
