Ever since we moved into our house the front of it has been over taken by bushes!
Here is a before:
I'm not sure why, but the previous homeowners let the greenery go a muck. The bushes were so large that they extended over 10 ft off of the house and covered about half of the front windows. So thanks to my lovely and generous parents when we got home it looked like this:
Me and Jon always had plans of removing them, but we never had the time to do it ourselves or the funds to hire someone out. My parents were itching to do something special for us so I mentioned the bushes and now it's EMPTY!
I know it looks a bit naked now, but we have big plans. We have always loved wrap around porches on houses, but there are not many of them on Long Island. We decided we are going to do our own little take on them and give our house a small front porch on both sides with new steps in the middle and some flower boxes in the windows and a small seating area.
Now we just need someone to fund this lovely project of ours! Mom? Dad? How about it? (Totally kidding)
Do you have any favorite front porches? We are looking for inspiration so send them our way.
:)
What an adorable house! It's amazing what a difference overgrown shrubs can make...what sweet parents you have!!

Love your house! I bet you get a lot more sunlight in those front windows now that those bushes aren't covering them up!
ReplyDeleteOoh I love the idea of a wraparound porch! Perfect for summer (and for year-round decorating!).
ReplyDeleteI think your house is adorable, and I think the porch idea is genius. Good luck!

Your house is so cute and will only be made better with a front porch!
ReplyDeleteAnd since you asked for favorite porches, I have to share mine. We spent many months re-building our front porch and I think it turned out pretty cute, if I do say so my self. :)

SUCH an adorable home - I can't wait to see the after shot of this! I'll go hunting and see what I can find...
ReplyDeleteYour house looks like it came straight out of a story book! I'm already imagining the amazing touches you'll bring with fabulous outdoor fabric and fun accessories. Are you thinking rocking chairs and swing or a little cafe area with a table and chairs for morning coffee?
ReplyDeleteGreat move! I, too, have bushes that are taking over the front of my house.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your house!! So cute :)
ReplyDeleteYour home is so cute - I love it...

I totally just did this a month ago... except we had to hire professionals because there was SO much overgrowth. It was a MESS!!
ReplyDeleteDon't you love a fresh start??
You have the sweetest parents! Now you can actually see your darling abode!! We recently undertook a similar project. My husband pulled the overgrown shrubs out with a chain on the back of our SUV! I can't wait for fall to arrive so I can fill the empty space with beautiful boxwoods!!
ReplyDeleteYou have a perfect house, really lovely. I can send you a front porch pic.
ReplyDeleteYour home is so charming. I love a cottage look and yours is perfect. How fun to pick out new plantings. I did a post on my porch re-do for spring and I have one coming up with fall flowers. here is the post on the porch if you want to take a peek. It is a Calif ranch but I too love a cottage look. Omg, your house is gorgeous! Love your plans for a porch. So sweet of your parents to clear out the bushes for you.:)
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing what pulling out old overgrown shrubs can do! I can't wait to see your porch, no matter who foots the bill :)
ReplyDeleteCute house! It is quite nude though. :) I am the absolute worst landscaper EVER so I will spare you my very poor advice. Happy digging!
ReplyDeleteGood luck! We did a similar project on our first home - the neighbors told us the bushes had been there for at least 50 years (!), and we popped them out with a pick up truck and chains (and a lot of sweat). Then my husband replaced the wrap around porch and, just as I was about to buy some fab porch furniture, we were transferred to another state :(
ReplyDeleteI never got to enjoy my porch - I'll live vicariously through you! :)
Butterfly bushes are fun in a yard

I love that idea! It'll be beautiful!
ReplyDeleteyeah, yeah, you don't me from Eve. I can tell you I am a HUGE HGTV addict.
ReplyDeleteI know you're looking to add a porch to the front but would you consider a stone courtyard instead? Material costs would be similar.
I'm a bit of an architectural snob. Cape Cods don't traditionally have wrap around porches. Consider how much light would be blocked out of those front rooms when you add a porch roof.
Just some food for thought. (Curb appeal the block has done quite a few of these stone patios lately and they are gorgeous!)
I'll be doing a post on some homes in hilton head this weekend and most of them have gorgeous front porches - its one of my absolute favorite things in a homes exterior - I'm sure your home is going to look so cozy and welcoming after this!
ReplyDeleteyour house is gorgeous! Cant wait to see what you do with it! Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteWow!!! What a huge difference now you can really see your sweet home!
ReplyDeleteGlad you got rid of the overgrown shrubs. Your house isn't so much naked now, but a clean slate. It is such a beautiful house. Can't wait to see what you do!
