Home Improvement: Living Room

I have seriously been tossing and turning at night with thoughts of fabric choices and paint choices. One of the rooms in my house that was at a point almost picture perfect is now being working on yet again.

Here is what my living room looked like when we were in the process of buying the house (Old home owners furnishings)

Then we moved in and much to everyone in my family’s horror I painted the living room a chocolate brown (excuse my dry cleaning on the chair):

Since then things have continually been tweaked. Those blue chairs are constantly moving around the room and the white chair was actually moved out of the space and landed in the office.

I always felt there was something missing from the wall above the fireplace so a couple of months ago some plates got added, chairs got moved and a new fixture was placed in the corner.

I then felt that the plates added a bit too much of a country vibe so those got taken off the walls. Sorry Jon! He took the time to hang them all up and literally a week later I was thinking of taking them down.

The space above the fireplace was still causing me trouble, but overall I was happy with the way the rest of the room looked. The only thing still driving me crazy was the cornices. I originally left them, because they just looked like they fit in with the house, but I never truly loved them so I was on the search for new window treatments to remove those.

I fell in love with the shades below and I’m actually having them custom made I just need to finalize a fabric choice.

This little detour in changing the window treatments has now turned into something much bigger. I love my decision to paint the walls chocolate brown. It makes the room stand out, it totally reflects my style, because brown is one of my favorite colors and all in all I’ve been happy with it, but I wanted to lighten things up a bit for the summer.

So now new window treatments are being custom made, a new rug has been ordered, a new mirror needs to be ordered and I’m having slipcovers made for the 2 club chairs.

Originally I was dying for this mirror, because come on who doesn’t love a ruffle!

But then I spotted this little number and it was love at first sight!

I’m leaning towards the chevron mirror, but I still have yet to pull the trigger and actually order it! Ah decisions, decisions.

Which is your favorite?

Whew! All that for a little switch of season. I know it will all be worth it in the end and once the late fall season rolls around I’ll be able to take out the old goods and re-vamp the room once again in time for the holidays.

So am I the only crazy lady that changes my decor per season? I like the idea of doing this, because then I won’t get bored with what is going in the room and want to change everything so quickly. I’ll have one look for fall-winter and then switch it up for spring-summer.

Now I must get going with my fabric picks because before I know it this summer will be over. I can’t believe it’s already June 1st!

  1. Oh that is hard because I have always loved the first mirror but I am loving that chevron mirror! The good news is that either way you can't go wrong!

  2. I like the chevron. It looks like seersucker, which is very southern.

  3. Love your room and the chocolate brown. My dining room is brown and I love how the white and blue really stand out. The chevron mirror is great but my favorite is the first mirror. I love the texture, it reminds me of an oyster shell (for me that is a good thing).

  5. I vote for the ruffle mirror. That would look fab against the chocolate.

Since it takes me like 2 years to decide on something, I definitely don't change with the seasons but it must be fun to visit someone who does :)

  9. I totally sympathize with you. Since moving into my home, we have painted, one, two, three....lost count of how many times! I tend to also want to paint as the seasons change, but in lieu of not driving my husband crazy, I just change out the accessories.

Oh, and I vote for the ruffled mirror. Absolutely gorgeous!

  10. I am exactly the same...I have an entire closet filled with items that I change out each season! Since I am not very big on holiday decorations (with the exception of Christmas, of course!) I think it's completely acceptable to change out all accessories a couple times a year (at least this is how I justify it for myself!). I have to vote for the ruffled mirror...but they would both look great. Love the room!

  11. I think switching a few things out for different seasons is a design-junkie REQUIREMENT!

  12. I love the brown in that room, and now that the fireplace is white too, it is beautiful.

Also, that chevron mirror is so pretty, you have to get it! or maybe you could get a plain one and paint the pattern on it like in your other post with all those ideas.

And I think I change my decor more than just with the season, it seems something is always getting tweeked haha.

I cant wait to see the curtains- love them!

  13. I love those blue chairs. LOOOOOVVVEEEE.

And I am going to have to be the oddball and say I love the ruffle mirror - it's unlike anything I've seen! But the other one is great too. The room looks awesome!

  15. The ruffle mirror makes me swoon! Good luck on your fabric choices. :) Your living room is amazing.

  16. Oh, I swoon at your lamp and blue chairs. LOVE THEM ! And I think both mirrors are fabulous. The ruffled is more feminine for sure, but the second choice has a great vibe. Tough choice !

  17. i love the first mirror!! can't wait to see how your window treatments turn out...at my parent's clubhouse, the designer did similiar window treatments but at the bottom, she bordered the sheer w/ burlap...it looks awesome! i have a pic if you want to see it.

  20. Ah thanks for all the help ladies! Decisions are the worst. I can make them for other people day in and out, but when it comes to me it's hard.

Originally I was so going for the ruffle one, but I think if I put it above the fireplace I'm still going to think something is missing on the sides and I'm not sure what I could put there that wouldn't distract from the ruffles.

I already have a plan if I get the chevron one so that is the way I'm leaning. I think I'll end up going with the Chevron and then hopefully all sneaking in the ruffle one at a later date in a different room in the house. win, win!

  21. I love your living room just as is but can't wait to see pics of the new transformation. I must say that I love your blog and follow it daily although I'm new to blogging. Good Luck

  22. Don't you wish you could have both mirrors? I know, sick and twisted, but the ruffle does have a lighter summer feel for me and the chevron mirror could be for other times of the year. I totally get the seasonal decorating - if only I had a bigger place to store stuff that I still want but is out of season. I could also relate to the decorator's insomnia. I've been a victim more times than I can count. Whatever you choose, it's going to look amazing!

  23. You are not crazy at all! I'm forever changing and rearranging around our house. I laughed when you apologized to your hubs for moving the plates - I'm always doing that! I make mine move something - swearing it's the last time - then a few weeks later, "oh, honey . . . "

  24. Oh! I just saw this- I have always loved that ruffle mirror. I love how it looks like coral and the mirror is antiqued. It would look beautiful against your brown walls.
