Simple delights…

One of my favorite freebie’s from this mornings DIY post was those lush and gigantic peonies!

There is nothing better than fresh cut flowers especially if they come from your yard. Now if you aren’t lucky enough to have any of your own look to your neighbors!

Last night this little lady walked the dogs with a pair of scissors so that I could quickly snip a couple of peonies from a neighbor that had about 10 massive bushes full of them! Don’t judge. :)

Jon wanted to kill me, but I think it was worth it!

Please tell me I’m not the only one that’s done this. Do you any of you have peonies growing in your yard? How do they grow? I tend to have a black thumb, but I’m itching to get some in my yard.

  2. I DO! They are gorgeously wonderful and suprisingly hearty. They are a little on the heavy side so you have to grow them through rings.. other than that they are really low maintenance!

  3. We inherited one with our house and we love it! I know they live for a long time (50+ years) but I don't know how easy it is to establish them. I planted one this spring but I don't think it made it but I probably planted it at the wrong time. Our peonies finished blooming about a month ago. Sigh. They were pretty while they lasted.

  4. Umm..I do it over here (in Austria) a lot..there are so many pretty flowers everywhere..and my husband tells me to do it when it's dark. Haha. terrible. And, yes, our front garden has some gorgeous peonies...but I didn't plant them: http://lifeingraz.blogspot.com/2010/05/peonies-for-me.html

  5. I planted a peony bush two years ago...not a single bloom yet!! And I've been known to snip the 'extra' blooms off other's. They aren't enjoying them inside...it's only fair to the flowers to have a loving home!

  6. i planted two bulbs this fall and they have risen to little bushes, but no buds or flowers, i hear that takes a year after you plant it. but i did hear they last 50-75 years!!

  9. Although I've never been brave enough to "permanently borrow" flowers from a neighbor, that's probably because none of my neighbors ever had peonies!

I have, however, taken flowers from our around our apartment complex...but I figure it's all part of the "amenities" we pay for ;)

  14. I love peonies but I haven't dared plant any because I would kill them.

  15. We have peonies and they are pretty low maintenance, but don't feel bad about clipping them because the die quickly after they bloom, so they would have been wilting in 24 hrs anyway! :) xxoo

  16. They are gorgeous...I can understand why you snipped them off. I am sure the owners would of been happy to give them to you anyway. Have a happy weekend, xv.

  18. Good Timing on this post...we currently have 2 bright pink peony plants that we transplanted from one of our grandparents house a few years ago...they are blooming like gangbusters. I only water them occasionally if the rain doesn't make a visit. We have a few towards the back of our yard that we are waiting to bloom that we planted last fall. I have some chopped in my kitchen right now!

I have posted a few pictures of them on my regular blog and Project365 blog this month...come check them out!

  20. Great blog. I am a bit surprised that so many would cut flowers from their neighbors plants! I think it's actually sorta rude. If everyone picked flowers from my yard, I wouldn't have any. One reason I don't cut flowers from my own yard to take inside, is because I like to have my yard look nice for others to admire...but not to steal from. People take fruit from our trees all the time...with large bags in hand. All you have to do is kindly as your neighbor. I hand out bags of fruit to all of our neighbors. It would be the polite thing to do. Okay, maybe you hit a nerve with this one..ha! I just wish people would feel a little less "entitled"!

  21. Love those. And I would be very tempted to help myself to a few.

One of my next door neighbors is 92 and really can't see well- so I occasionally help myself to a couple of her hydrangeas. I know she doesn't know- but I wonder if her children that come by to check on her notice them missing! :)

  22. I have a few plants and I love them... starting them is pretty easy... ask a friend for a start in the fall... now, the only bad thing is they usually don't bloom the first year; but, wait and the second year is wonderful and pretty soon you will need to divide and that means more peonies.. and then you can share with a friend. Oh, please try them... they are too beautiful not to have at least one or two or my dream is a very long line of nothing; but, peonies...

  23. Love peonies! I have them in my living room and kitchen right now - bought them at the farmers market. I would love to cut someone elses but my husband would probably have a heart attack!

I always want to cut a branch of peoples hydrangeas as well!

  24. I've never ACTUALLY snipped any, but I do think about it a lot! Especially the neighbors who have SO many blooms!

I do have a great picture of Ryan with one hand in the neighbor's rosemary bush and the other hand going into his pocket (this was before we planted our own little herb garden). They had three GIANT bushes on the sidewalk, we needed some for a dinner roll recipe, and three stems was like $6 at the market. No brainer :)

  27. The peonies at my little brother's in engagement were out of a neighbor's yard, LOL...
I didn't do it, not that time at least!

  28. HAHA! You are bold and I love it! I'm always eyeing my neighbors' hydrangea bushes and I SO WISH I could grow peonies here in TX. They're easy growing perennials I read - try them so I can snip some from you :)
