IN HER SHOES: Aphro Chic

The logo above really shows how important branding is to your company. The second I saw it I immediately thought this business owner must be stylish, chic and professional. I knew that her product had to be awesome.

Of course her product didn't disappoint. Jeanine designs pillows with a global feel that are still modern, eco-friendly and offer you a high-end look that won't break the bank.

I've loved seeing her pillows pop up in different blogs and publications and was totally shocked to find out that Aphro Chic is her 2nd full time job. That's right this amazing women works her 9-5 and then goes home and takes care of her line and blog. Talk about multi-tasking. Of course I had to email her and see how she does it.

Take a look...

7:00 am. The alarm starts to go off. Snooze. Snooze. Snooze.

8:10am. Ok, I have to get up. Time for a shower. Getting a little more dressed up than usual. I’m going to the Kelly Wearstler book signing this evening at Gump’s! Super excited!

9:00 am. Off to take my morning walk with the hubs. Piece of toast in hand for “breakfast.” Most important meal of the day, right? It’s very rare I have time for something more substantial, but I can’t get started without something in my tummy. Morning conversation is about politics, culture and the African Diaspora. We like to keep it lively, and it gets my brain ready for work.

9:30 am. On the bus and on the way to the day job. Rocking out to my Pandora Mariah Carey playlist and multi-tasking. Checking AphroChic emails, blog submissions and the twitter account on my Blackberry. Oooh! An email from my friends at Nesting Newbies. Having dinner with them on Saturday. Can't wait!

10:00 am. Arrive at day job. A non-profit where I do public policy work. Time for some decaf before I start the day. That's the second half of breakfast. I'm sure I'll be starving by noon.

11:00 am. First conference call of the day. Working on an initiative to prevent dating violence and sexual assault on college campuses.

11:55 am. Call is over and I'm officially hungry but I need to head over to the printer to pick up fabric swatches for a potential interior design client. Lunch will have to wait. Anyway, I can't wait to see how the fabric turned out!

12:30 pm. Finally it’s time to grab some lunch at Whole Foods. Pasta salad, yogurt and an apple. Taking the rest of my lunch break to tweet and read some blogs. So relaxing.

1:30 pm. Back to work. Doing the daily activity of answering emails, reviewing reports and writing memos for the day job. I did sneak in a coca cola today. I try to keep the caffeine to a minimum, but some days it’s just necessary.

3:00 pm. Time for a 15 minute coffee break to check in on AphroChic emails. Some great news about gift guides and press inquiries! Scheduling some time on the calendar to prep products for gift guides and set a reminder to drop items off on Monday morning before I head to work.

4:50 pm. Making sure I have plenty of business cards for tonight's event. Pulling out the blue cardi for a more dressed look. Lips glossed, hair in place. Ready to meet Kelly!

5:15 pm. Stuck in major traffic while on the bus. Isn’t that always the way? The event ends at 6:00 and I don’t think I’ll get there until 5:30. Hope I can get in line for Kelly to sign my book.

5:30 pm. Made it to Gump’s. A little winded from running to the event (whew!) but still looking together. More importantly, I made it in time! Say hi to my friend Carmen and now I need to go buy a book at the register. Kelly is wonderful in person. She is taking the time to talk to everyone. So happy that I got a chance to let her know about my design work and what an inspiration she is to me. I tried to take a pic with her with my Blackberry, but they did a picture instead with the pro photographer. So no pictures to share (yet!).

6:00 pm. Waiting to meet up with my husband at Gump’s. We’re going for a nice long walk home. Feeling pretty smart because I remembered to pack a pair of sneakers in my bag. Heels are definitely overrated.

6:45 pm. Get home and find out some really great news - we have made it into Interior Design Magazine’s Fall Market Tabloid! Time to celebrate with a nice dinner.

9:00 pm. Been a full day, but there’s still a bit more work to do. Take some time to answer a few questions for a couple of interviews that are due this weekend. Catch up on my tweeting (always a must), and let people know about the magazine feature on Facebook.

10:00 pm. Getting ready to write tomorrow’s blog post. Searching through my inbox to find photos from the Culinarium event last month. Why are these things never where you leave them? Checking my Igoogle calendar for the rest of the post details. Thank God for online calendars (and smart phone schedulers, and day planners, and good old fashioned wall-mounted flip calendars).

11:00 pm. Wrapping myself up in the snuggy, getting ready to spend some time with a cup of tea while enjoying my new book. It’s been a long, and really fun day. And for once, it looks like I’m going to get to bed before 1:00 am. Fantastic!

A big thanks to Jeanine for sharing her day with us. She got so much accomplished. So jealous that her hubby gets home at a normal time. Jon normally gets in at 8:45 sometimes 9!

IN HER SHOES: Design Dump

Blogger Autumn from Design Dump has been on my radar for quite some time now. Not only is she an amazing interior designer, but she's a wonderful mom to 3 kiddos and wife to her contractor husband. How fun! Due to her husband's career they have lived and remodeled many homes and her blog readers are the lucky ones that get to do none of the work, but see all of the jaw dropping before and afters, diy projects and tips of trade.

One of my favorite rooms designed by Autumn:

Autumn gets more accomplished in her day than I ever do! Not sure how she does it. She manages to juggle mom duties, design work and being a super cool wife all perfectly.

Enjoy!
________________________________________________________________________________________________
7:15 My alarm goes off. Usually I hit the snooze button at least twice, but this morning, I have three kids to get in costumes for the annual Halloween Parade at school. I lay in bed for a few minutes, checking my e-mail on my iphone. I'm guest posting today at Finding Fabulous, and so I sneak on the computer, and copy the address from the post, and quickly write a linking post for my blog.

7:25  I shower, throw on a pair of jeans, sneakers, a blue and white striped button down and an orange jacket, in honor of the Hallowen festivities. My husband, Allen wakes the kids up (Olivia-11, Charlotte-9, and Grady-6), while I dry my hair.

7:45 As Allen walks out the door, I kiss him, (he's getting a ride with a friend) and he takes out the trash. I ask you ladies, is anything sexier than a man taking out the trash?  I think not...well, maybe a man vacuuming or installing a light fixture...

8:00 It's breakfast time...grits and scrambles eggs. My southern husband and my 12+ years in the south has rubbed off on me! Plus, I'm trying to offset the sugar I know the kids are going to get at school today.

8:15 The next 20 minutes are a blur. I transform my pajama-clad kids into Medusa, Cleopatra, and one ferociously cute pirate, pack lunches, and make sure that they all have a change of clothes for after the parade. I somehow manage to throw some hot rollers in my hair, put some makeup on my face,  give my pirate a scar and a goatee, and put makeup on Cleopatra and Medusa.

8:35 Leave the house with 4 kiddos (it's my turn for carpool with my neighbor) for the 1.25 mile drive to school. I'm turning around in our cul de sac when I realize the hot rollers are still in my hair! Ahhhh! Run back into the house, take out the rollers and spray some hairspray on my hair. Ah...better!

8:45 At the school, I drop off the 6 dozen cookies and 32 treat bags I made last night, claim a primo spot in the gym for the parade, and chat with other moms until the Halloween Parade starts. After the Parade, I help out for a few minutes at my oldest daughters party, and then kiss her goodbye.

9:30 Head to my husbands office. They have hired me to do some work on their lobby and a private office, and I am just wrapping up a few last minute items. I grab two large frames, and the 2 new photographs that I selected to go in them, and check on a few photos that will be mounted in the office of the VP.

10:00 I realize I am starving! With all of the craziness this morning, I realize that I didn't eat breakfast, so I stop at a gas station and grab a granola bar and a Diet Pepsi. While driving, I crank up the music and daydream of the day when we buy our next house. Living in a rental house is no fun when you are a designer!

10:30 Back to the house to let the furnace repair crew in the house. It's been snowing off and on all week here, and our furnace is broken. Stinking rental house. Grrr...hopefully tonight, I will come home to a warm house! I also grab my paint deck and bag, and a framed print that I bought for $20 at a thrift store.

10:45 I head to the framers to drop off the 2 frames from the construction office. New mats are selected. I also pick out a nice linen mat for my thrift store treasure.

11:45 I pick up lunch for myself and a client at one of my favorite local restaurants... 2 greek chicken salads to go. Yum!

12:00 At my clients house, we munch on our salads and discuss the progress of the two rooms we are working on...her 6 year old daughters room and her living room. We decide on pillow sizes and fabrics for the living room, unpack a mirror that just arrived, and check out the stripes that she painted in her daughters room last week.

1:45 It's back to the school for my son's party. I 'm in charge of the Halloween Bingo station, and nearly get hoarse while trying to read the kids a book after bingo. Since there are 5 groups of kids, I play bingo and read the same book 5 times.

3:25 School is out! The kids and I head home, grab some leftover cookies as a snack, and tiptoe around the furnace crew, who are still there. I convince my very stubborn 6 year old to get dressed for Tae Kwon Do. Tears and begging ensues, but I prevail. We WILL get our $80 worth this month if it kills me.

4:00 Arrive at Tae Kwon Do, only to realize that it's starts at 4:30, not 4:00. Take the kids to a nearby park and let them play while I return a few e-mails on my iphone.

4:30 Tae Kwon Do. I dress Grady in his battle gear, and then leave to go pick up my husband. His car is in the shop, and so I have been picking him up  from work. More daydreaming. My imaginary house is. SO. awesome.

5:45 Back at the house. The new furnace is in, and the house is warming up! Hallelujah! However...it's still too cold to cook dinner. (cough, ahem...*wink) We catch the most amazing sunset!

6:30 Dinner at our favorite chinese restaurant...Sizzling Rice Soup, General Taos Chicken and Five Taste Shrimp. Our faves. It's dark outside now. We stop to get gas. My hair is flat, my makeup is smeared, but I am full and happy.

8:00 Home to our now toasty house. I love being warm! The kids need baths, and turn the bathwater green and black from all the halloween hairspray and makeup. Since they don't have school tomorrow, I let them watch How To Train Your Dragon for the 15th time.

9:00. Get into my lounge gear, and head to my computer to write this post. Up next: Catching up on Glee, Survivor, Flipping Out and House Hunters International, while using the laptop to check my email, catch up one some design blogs, and work on the post for my one year blog anniversary, which is THIS weekend!

10:00 Tuck the kiddos in.

11:30-12:00 Lights out. No school tomorrow, so I get to sleep in! Yay!

Thanks Camila for letting me take part in this fabulous series. I had a lot of fun bringing you along on my crazy Thursday! And, thank goodness I actually had a semi-interesting day...there are days when I spend way too much time at Costco, and run countless errands before I get home to spend hours sorting socks and folding laundry while watching back episodes of Modern Family. Oh, and usually on these days I skip the shower and wear a hat all day. N---o---t pretty.

Whew I'm tired just reading that. I keep saying it over and over, but I must say it again... Mom's are super hero's. They really do it all.

IN HER SHOES: Emily A. Clark

Today's featured lady is a semi new friend that I'm very happy I made. Emily from Emily A. Clark is always full of the sweetest comments, great projects and over all beautiful design inspiration. I got the opportunity to meet her in person during the taping of the Nate show and I'm so happy she came! She is just as sweet in person and absolutely stunning. I can't believe she's a mom of 3! I loved a glimpse into her day with her 3 most important little clients. They are beyond adorable. She truly is a super mom.

When Camila asked me to write a post for the “In Her Shoes” series, I almost laughed out loud. I hope she wasn’t hoping for a glamorous play-by-play of my interior decorating business. I enjoy my projects and blogging, but it’s my first job as a mommy of three that keeps me busiest during the day. . . Here’s how a typical Wednesday goes down around here:

6:00am Alarm clock goes off. I decide looking glamorous isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and hit snooze. I will just wash my hair and forego makeup until later in the day . . . Quick shower and then head downstairs to check my email before I have to wake my oldest up for kindergarten.

7:00am My son is dressed for school and downstairs. I make his lunch while he eats Cocoa Puffs and watches “Little Bill.” (Are anyone else’s kids as obsessed with that show as mine are?) His ride gets here at 7:30 (thank goodness for her!).

7:30am Back upstairs to get dressed and get the girls up. My second oldest goes to pre-school today. I’m rarely alone. The baby will stay at home with me.

9:00am We return home. I make coffee. I check email and look at a few blogs while the baby (my one-year-old) hangs on my arm. I need to finish a project for an online client but that will have to wait. My kids are out of clean socks and underwear. It’s laundry day!

10:30am Folding laundry, checking email, cleaning kitchen and folding more laundry—all with the help of my little one. She has apparently “aged out” of a morning nap. Oh, I also get her off the kitchen counter approximately seven times. She is a monkey.

11:30am Pick my four-year-old up from school and return home to fix their lunch.

12:30pm Get everyone fed and sit down on the couch to eat my lunch and watch approximately 15 minutes of the “Teen Mom” reunion special I tivo’d. This show makes me really sad. . . Why do I keep watching it?

1:00pm Fold more laundry, quickly put on some make-up, get my daughter dressed for dance class.

2:00pm I drop her at dance and go to pick up my little boy from school. We ride with a friend who also has to pick up her little boy from school and has a daughter in dance at the same time. We go to get our Pumpkin Lattes from Dunkin Donuts--a new Wednesday ritual that makes me very happy.

3:30pm Home again. Put the baby down for a nap, and sit at the kitchen counter on my laptop while my older two draw, color, cut, paste. It’s like art class every day around here. Starting to feel stressed about the small amount of online work I’ve gotten done today.

4:30pm Email my husband to see if he will take kids to church by himself tonight while I try to finish this project. He says yes!

5:15pm Start supper. It’s macaroni, micro waved bacon and apple slices. Yes, I’m admitting this. Wednesdays always mean a hodge-podge of whatever I can quickly throw together before we’re out the door again.

5:45pm Husband takes kids to church. House is quiet. What do I do first?

6:00pm Work on finishing idea board for my online client. I’m picky. This is taking a long time. Eat chips and salsa for supper.

8:45pm Still working when my family gets home. All three kids are asleep in the van. My husband brought me a Frosty from Wendy’s.

9:15pm All of the kids are in bed. I’m way too tired to write a blog post. Fortunately, I had written one last week that I never posted. Yay! Make a plan of everything I need to get done tomorrow. Stress out some more, trying to figure out how I’ll get it all done.

11:00pm Go to bed. Can’t stay up any later tonight; I can barely keep my eyes open.
And, so that is a riveting day in the life of yours truly. . . .
Oh, and since it seems to be customary to show the actual shoes you wore that day, here you have it:

Yes, I’m openly admitting I wear these “mommy” Mary-Jane tennis shoes, black socks and all. They are my “working” shoes. (Can you see the spray paint splatter?) I don’t wear them every day, but they’re great for dragging three kids from place to place. And, for all of you young, hip career girls in your cute heels, saying this will never be you. . . Your day will come : )

_____________________________________________________________________________________

A big thanks to Emily for participating. I know how busy you are so it was great for you to carve a little time in for this feature. I must say I'm truly amazed about what Mom's can accomplish in a day. Whether you are a working mom or a stay at home mom you ladies do so much and all with a smile. Totally scared I won't be able to do the same one day. You are all rock stars in my eyes!

****Jon wanted me to hand over the computer to him so he could say a few words:

Hey everyone it's Jon. I just wanted to thank everyone for all of your sweet thoughts on my birthday. I'm glad that you enjoy our projects. I'm sure Camila will be starting a waiting list for all of you ladies that want to hire me out. Perhaps a road trip across America is in my near future? I'm sure you'll be seeing my hairy arms in many future projects to come. Didn't have to work on any last night, but Camila has a nice list for this weekend. JK you know I love her, but seriously we're working on finishing a project this weekend that was my baby from the beginning. I think you'll all love it.

-Jon

New Look: In her shoes!

I mentioned earlier that I was busy doing little mini photo shoots this weekend for the new blog. Since things are getting more organized in the new blog I'm having all of the IN HER SHOE features in a section so that's it's easier to find them.

Check out the picture to go with that section:

I'm rounding up a list of wonderful ladies that are going to featured and on the top of my list is the amazingly talented Michelle Adams from Lonny. A year ago the lovely team at Lonny dried the tears from my eyes that Domino left behind and gave me the promise of chic and stylish home design. A promise they have delivered on and this month they celebrate their one year anniversary!

You must head on over and check out their latest issue it's my all time favorite!

Congrats Lonny team on a job well done!!!!

IN HER SHOES: The Inside Stoop

Lindsey is the author of The Inside Stoop where she writes about her design finds and inspiration. I only recently found it, but it's already become a daily read. If anyone knows about design trends and styles it would be her, because she works for HGTV in TV development! Cool, right?

She gets to watch TV, eat cupcakes and read blogs all while she is at work and she doesn't get in trouble, because it's her job. Sign me up! (I totally know it's more complicated than that, but all of the above perks are super cool.)

I love coming up with new things whether it is a cool name for a nail polish that I think should be invented or show idea like one on HGTV starring my super handy husband and his sometimes nutty, but totally lovable wife, which means I was super interested in a day in Lindsey's life. She gets to brainstorm all day on show ideas, search for new stars, tape with new stars and watch footage of existing HGTV shows.

I quickly emailed her and asked her to join in on the fun and she very quickly rose to the challenge.

So sit back, relax and enjoy a day in her life!

8:00PM
My best friend Blake is the Editor of Playbill. Like the magazine you get everytime you go to see a broadway play. She has these super highbrow tastes when it comes to plays. literally, since the day she was named Editor, i have been begging her to take me to see Mary Poppins. it's actually been a big point of contention between the two of us. she refuses to see it. tonight, she has a news reporter friend who is doing a piece on Mary Poppins. for the story, he has a walk on role in the show just for one night. so Blake wants to go support him. Guess who goes as her plus one...

11:00PM
go home, turn on the TV and put on my painting overalls. i need to paint my apartment, because we are shooting in it next week. I'm embarrassed to have a camera crew at my place with the walls looking the way they do.
1:00AM
pass out way too late.

A big thanks to Lindsey for letting us in on the inner workings of one of our favorite networks.

Now I'll just sit here waiting to see if her people call my people so that we can get the ball rolling on pitching a TV show. Ah a girl can dream... :)

IN HER SHOES: Maggie Rose

Today's IN HER SHOES featured lady is leading a double life. She works a part job Mon-Thursday and then does interior decorating and blogging on her free time.

I met Maggie from Maggie Rose a while back. I believe it was due to some sort of blogger gift exchange. I remember have loads of fun picking out little gifts to mail out to Maggie and brighten up her day.

I'm exhausted from reading up about her day and will never complain again about waking up at 7:45am. I get to sleep in compared to what she does.

Enjoy a peek into her life!

Hey HHFITD readers! Maggie from Maggie Rose here to take you with me on a typical day-in-the-life!

I work a part-time day job Monday through Thursday, so these days I wake up about 5:30 after hitting snooze twice. Quick wash of the hair, stumble around to find an outfit, make a piece of toast. My boyfriend Ryan wakes up about 6:00 and at 6:15 we rush out the door, hop in the car, and he drives me to the train.

The train ride takes about 40 minutes, so I'm on it for almost an hour since I like to get there early enough to know I didn't miss it! Here's me trying to look nonchalant on the train, but just looking sleepy:

On the train I check my email on my phone, approve any comments that the early risers have posted, then I pull out my reading. Today I read part of The Martha Rules - secrets of business success by Martha Stewart, whom I adore.

I hop on Twitter quickly before we pull into my stop and gripe about being up early. I'm definitely not a morning person!

Once I get to Puyallup, I get off the train and wait about five minutes before my coworker picks me up on her way to work. Because our office is pretty rural, it would take me another hour to get there from the train station if I took the bus! Driving it only takes 15 minutes.
We arrive at work at 8 a.m. Here's a peek at my cubicle!

I know, I'm kind of a mess! I work for the county library system in the county south of Seattle. I work for our development department, writing direct mail letters and newsletter articles and raising money.

During breaks I pop into the blog to approve comments, find out what's happening on twitter, do some quick blog reading, and follow up on emails with edecorating clients. In the afternoon I email briefly with Ryan. He has guy's night tonight so I'm on my own for dinner - darn, cause he's usually the cook!

4:30 I get to head home! We make it to the train station about 4:45, but my train doesn't come until 5:12, so I do a lot of standing around here:

5:15 On the train at last. I pull out my notebook and review my to-do list for the evening. We're doing a photoshoot on Friday for the ebook I'm working on, and I still have a ton of stuff to prepare. I make a shopping list for the last props that I need and figure out a rough order each shot will be done in.

About halfway home I hop onto my iPhone (couldn't live without it!) and answer an email to a client about a rug she's looking at. I email to confirm the photo time with our photographer for Friday (Ryan's cousin!). Check twitter again and have about 200 posts to catch up on. Oy.
About 6:00 we arrive in downtown Seattle and I catch a bus to get home - try to take a picture but end up jogging to catch my bus! Whew!

I head home from the busstop and decide to swing by the grocery store and pick up a cupcake. They sell singles from the yummy Cupcake Royale, a Seattle staple. I get vanilla with chocolate frosting, then pick up the Martha Stewart Living just for fun.

6:50 Home at last! I take a quick picture of my shoes (patent leather black flats) before slipping them off - we are a no-shoes house since we have painted floors that get dirty (you can see the scuffs here in the entryway)!

I heat up leftovers (told you Ryan was the cook) and settle in at the computer with my cupcake and a glass of white wine. Now is when the real work starts!

Tonight I have quite a few things I'm working on - I like to work on projects in quick bursts of energy, then move on for another burst, then circle back. I'm editing images of past edecorating packages, getting them ready for the website. I'm also refining my to-do list (I keep one online that needs updating) with all my notes from the train. I'm also scouting for furniture for my next edecorating guide when those get too dull, and reading the blogs I didn't get to at work today. I should work on setting up props for the photo shoot but I'm put it off for tomorrow so the cat doesn't mess it up (she's been into everything lately!)

Sometime around 9 I realize I haven't written a blog post for tomorrow yet! Whoops! I regret not taking photos of our new(ish) kitchen island last weekend. I've been meaning to forever. Oh well, save it for next week!

Finally the multi-tasking gets the better of me and about 10 I head towards bed with my new Martha Stewart. Ryan texts to say he's heading home and should be back in an hour - by the time he arrives, I'm fast asleep, preparing for my alarm to go off tomorrow at 5:10 again!

xo Maggie
