Reveal: Guest Bedroom

To be honest with you when I first moved in our house I didn’t give the second bedroom much thought. It quickly became a home office. I picked out a color I liked, painted the walls, added furniture from the old office and called it a day.

Then I took a career turn, did my interior design schooling and started up my own business so my office moved to a bigger room in the house and this room remained a blank slate. I wanted to repaint, but the paint was still fresh. This room will eventually become a nursery room (Totally not pregnant) and will need to be re-vamped then so I wanted something to keep me happy during this in between stage.

So here is a little before shot:

office-after 006

{Sorry for the horrible picture. The colors are really off due to using the flash! Whoops. It was a  chocolate brown/blue color combo. }

A peek of the room when you first walk in:

guestbedroomtwo I decided to keep the blue paint on the walls and take it in a different different with pops of navy blue and a variety of shades of yellow I designed a new look while trying to re-use items I already had.

Since this is now a guest bedroom we needed to pick up a bed. We picked this one during the summer. It was craigslist to the rescue. We picked up this trundle bed for only $270 with the mattress!

guestbedroom3

Close up of bed: Due to the size of the room I didn’t have space for a traditional nightstand. So I picked up this pedestal table at a thrift shop and gave it that lacquered look with many, many, many coats of spraypaint. It’s the perfect size/height. If it ever gets in the way it can moved to the space underneath the window.

guestbedroom11

Close up of pedestal table: Loving the high shine already and we still need to cover it with high-gloss poly.

guestbedroom12

Pillow talk: Here is where I used the Roberta Roller Rabbit and the best part about them? I made them! Yes, yours truly sewed them. I’ll do a DIY post on them tomorrow.

guestroom13

Another major DIY project was the massive corkboard above the bed. I wanted an area to pin up inspiration photos, family snap shots, ticket stubs, etc. I didn’t want to buy it though due to the high sticker price on them so DIY to the rescue and we were in business:

guestbedroom14

Close up of desk area:

guestbedroom4

The desk was a garage sale find from two summers ago that was just hanging out in our basement. I gave it a fresh coat of white paint, added a desk chair (that someone was throwing out, but I snagged and painted white), along with some shelving for my many, many, many books.

I think everything is better with flowers so I had to run out and pick some up yesterday morning for my photos.

guestroom5

The opposite side of the room houses some of my craft supplies:

guestroom6

Years ago I picked up some craft store cubes at my local Michaels. They were individual pieces, but to give them a more custom look we went to Home Depot and picked out a piece of wood that was already cut and ready for stain/paint. We went for yellow stain so that the wood grain would still show.

Here is a close up of the yellow stain:

guestbedroom8

I decided to add a little bling to my lamp and went searching in my jewelry box for the perfect piece. I love the way it looks!

Close up of the artwork:

guestbedroom16

I didn’t want overwhelm the wall with a lot of art, but I did want some key pieces. So using leftover spraypaint from the pedestal table I made a custom silhoutte with a piece of canvas and contact paper. I found a Kate Spade ad I loved so that got popped in a frame with a painted mat. An old thrift store find mirror got a fresh coat of white paint and a chair silhoutte and a piece by Lottie Frank that I’ve had for quite some time in a drawer finally got some love.

To the left of my storage area is a large ottoman that I already had from my living room. It didn’t really fit in the room due to it’s over-sized nature so up it went. For another pop of color I added some vintage silk fabric I found at a thrift store that was given to me for free by the owner!

guestbedroom9

Close up fabric: It had the perfect blend of colors for my room.

guestbedroom10

I hope you all enjoyed the reveal. I don’t have an exact round-up of how much everything cost, because most of the items were already in my home. They just needed to be worked on a bit. Tomorrow I’ll have a DIY post on how to make that massive board and then Friday I’ll feature my DIY technique for the pillows that even I was able to make!

I’m exhausted and it’s a snow day outside so I’m just dreaming of getting into this bed and snuggling with my pups and some magazines.

*So happy everyone is loving the room. It's now one of my favorite places in my house! Now I just need some guests. Anyone want to come visit me in NY?

Just wanted to answer a couple of questions.

The curtains were a previous DIY project. You can check them out here

The area rug was a find from Urban Outfitters. I found it months ago at my local UO and it was on sale from $65 to $9.99. I snagged it up,because I figured eventually I would find a place for it.

The ceiling fan is LUCITE. It was my husband's compromise for me wanting a ghost chair. Still want the ghost chair. One day! It was from LOWES by Hampton Bays and around $70. It's no longer online.

The shelves above the desk are LACK. I like them and they hold some of books which are heavy. If you bolt them into studs they should hold around 35 pounds. We bolted our into sheetrock and they each hold around 15 pounds.

My house is an old cape from the 1930's and even though it looks like the built-in drawers might be just for show due to the slant they actually work. They house Jon's clothes. Poor guy has most of his clothes in their instead of mine I mean our bedroom.

I absolutely adore this room! The colors are so playful and elegant. I am planning to redo my own bedroom, and this room has served as a wonderful inspiration! Do you know the name of the color you used on the walls and where you purchased the paint? I would love to use the same color. Thanks! I admire your work.
